Summer days out

As the weather (hopefully) starts to show some signs of improvement, your thoughts may be turning to summer days out.   Here are some ideas for good value days out using public transport.

Dartmoor Sunday Rover

A Dartmoor Sunday Rover ticket  is a great way to explore Devon by train and bus.  An adult day ticket for 2014 costs £10.00, £6.70 for a child aged between 5 and 15 years, and £20 for a family ticket(up to 2 adults and 3 children).  It is available every Sunday from 25 May until 14 September 2014, and the Bank Holidays on Monday 25 August.  It gives you access to all FGW trains in Devon, including the Sunday only trains between Exeter and Okehampton  (Sunday only service operated by FGW), and to Gunnislake.  You can also use the ticket on all Stagecoach South West buses and certain buses operated by First, Dartline, Western Greyhound and Plymouth Citybus.  For more information click here.

Ranger and Rover tickets

First Great Western has published a very comprehensive booklet about its ranger and rover tickets. It is called “Ranger and Rover Tickets – the easy way to explore the region by train”, and is available at major stations.  Ranger and Rover tickets are subject to some weekday peak hour restrictions (see booklet for further information), but travel at weekends is unrestricted.

Day Rangers

Various day ranger tickets are available for use in Devon and Cornwall (as well as elsewhere within the Great Western franchise area).  These include the Devon Day Ranger (£10) and Devon Evening Ranger (£5) tickets, the Ride Cornwall Day Ranger (£10), and various Day Ranger tickets for branch lines in Devon and Cornwall (ranging between £3.90 and £5.00).  There is not one for the Avocet Line.  The prices quoted are for adult tickets, although discounts are available for relevant Railcard holders and children.

Multi-day rovers

Multi-day rover tickets  allow travel on either 3 days in 7, or 8 days in 15.   Tickets can be purchased for three  areas.

The Freedom of the South West ticket covers the whole of Devon and Cornwall and extends to Weymouth, Portsmouth Harbour, Swindon, Worcester and Great Malvern.  A 3 day ticket is £74 (£48.85 with railcard and £36.50 child) and the 8 days in 15 ticket £100.50 (£66.35 with railcard and £50.25 child).  For terms and conditions click here.

The Freedom of Devon and Cornwall Rover covers the whole of Devon and Cornwall.  A three day ticket costs £45.00 and an 8 day ticket £69 (with appropriate reductions for children and railcard holders).

The Freedom of the Severn and Solent Rover covers the Freedom of the South West area minus  Devon and Cornwall – the closest stations to our line being Tiverton Parkway and Axminster.  The prices are the same as for a Freedom of Devon and Cornwall
