Summer Outing to Barnstaple

TO BARNSTAPLE  FOR  LUNCH  on Sunday 3^rd July

A journey from one side of Devon to the other, from the Exe to the Taw through beautiful rolling countryside of farm land and forest. We will leave on the 0910 from Exmouth, and there are various options for the return journey (see times at the bottom of the page).

The journey up the scenic Tarka line is very much part of the day out. The line winds along the Taw valley through beautiful forestry and farmland, crossing the river many times.

We will have lunch at the Royal and Fortescue Hotel, where the main restaurant does a carvery lunch from 12 to 2pm for a little under £10 + some a la carte dishes. We will be booked for 12.15. The bar does lighter lunches at £6 to £10 and there’s a bistro next door.

It’s 10-12 minute walk from the railway station, through a warehouse shopping centre and crossing the river. The hotel is close to the end of the bridge on the edge of the main town shopping area.

For those who don’t want the long walk or if it’s raining, buses run regularly from the rail to bus station. The hotel is a short level walk down a back street from the bus station.

Barnstaple is a good shopping centre and flat for easy wandering around. There are walks along the river in both directions which may include finding the old Town station, now disguised as a primary school, and perhaps crossing the river on the old GWR link railway bridge – maybe an idea to fill the hour before lunch?
